Here’s the good news and the bad news: your career, your responsibility. Without question there are going to be plenty of people to help you out along the way but at the end of the day this is all yours. But we don’t want this to scare the shit out of you. The truth is the earlier you get your head around this the better, as we’ve seen way too many people waste their time waiting for someone else to step in and build their careers for them. Your biggest career asset is you and there’s no better way to build a sense of experience, confidence and momentum than taking charge of your career.
Make a list of the things that you’re waiting for – help with your resume, an introduction to a family friend, someone to practice your interview with - and ask yourself what can I take responsibility for and do for myself? Write the first draft of your resume yourself. E-mail the family contact with his name in the subject line. Sign yourself up for a public speaking course. This career thing is yours, step up and live it.
